Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT today do well with individual spreadsheet tasks. You can ask ChatGPT to write you even anything from a simple to an excessively complicated excel formula. It will typically accomplish that task quickly and easily.
What has been more difficult has been to get an LLM to understand and give information about an entire spreadsheet. The issue has been one of tokens. Trying to take and entire spreadsheet and turn it into something it can understand – tokens – has been too big of a job until now.
Microsoft announces SpreadsheetLLM. SpreadsheetLLM pre-processes the spreadsheet using their program called SheetCompressor which reduces token usage by 96% allowing the LLM to understand the entire spreadsheet.
