Artificial General Intelligence or AGI is still a little ways away. It used to be the stuff of science fiction and then ChatGPT showed everyone how well AI can perform, but even the most advanced generative AI with it’s poems and images, is quite a ways away from real reasoning and AGI. But that future is not as much in the future as it used to be. The best guesses today are 3-5 years out. That gives us AGI before 2030 and maybe even sooner.
What will be required to reach AGI? One thing required will be a more robust General World Model. To do that, companies like OpenAI will have to do more than simply scan text. They will have to find a way to have the models watch videos and probably even have robots out in the world using computer vision. Basically, mimic how all young animals on this planet figure out their own world model.
That amount of computing power and required energy is completely viable today. It may put a strain on the electric grid, but some providers are looking to build their own datacenters and their own power supply. The computing power is available today and will continue to fuel the growth of chip makers like Intel (INTC) and Nvidia (NVDA).
