Is ChatGPT Getting Lazy?

AI Tech

According to this Guardian article, users are reporting that ChatGPT is getting lazy. Some queries are simply going unanswered while some are half answered. Theories range from AI consciousness being bored to AI Quiet Quitting. The most reasonable answer seems to be user expectations. As we have seen, AI is really, really great at a lot of tasks. What may be happening is that users are attempting to use AI in adjacent areas where is may not be as well suited. The Guardian point out:

Inflated user expectations could also be playing a role. All emerging technology goes through something that Gartner terms the “hype cycle”: you go from inflated expectations to disillusionment to a plateau of productivity. Last year AI went stratospheric – and so did people’s expectations of what it could achieve. We were very much at the “inflated expectations” stage of the hype cycle. It’s possible that some of the complaints about ChatGPT’s laziness are because people simply expected way too much from it.
